Publication DescriptionA closed form optimization procedural method for design of reinforced concrete short tied columns subjected to axially concentrated load is presented. The optimization procedure is formulated as finding the minimum cost of design with constraints imposed based on the Egyptian Code of Practice (ECP), the cost (material, labor) of concrete, longitudinal and shear reinforcement, and formwork are included in the formulation of the cost objective function. Egyptian code requirements for the strength, practical, ductility, and serviceability constraints are included in the formulation. A closed form solution of the optimization problem expresses the optimal values of the longitudinal reinforcement, shear reinforcement and column dimensions in terms of strength, ductility, and cost parameters is presented. A complete design flow chart leading to a closed form optimum cost solution is achieved and several numerical examples are given to show the validity of the proposed design optimization procedure.
