Course Description

 

MTH 120 Mathematics for Economists (1) (3cr)

 

Continuity and limits, rate of change of economic variables, differentiation, maxima and minima and points of inflexion for a single variable, integration, logarithmic and exponential functions. Taylor’s theorem. Applications to  economic theory.

  

MTH 221 Mathematics for Economists (2) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite MTH 120: Functions of several variables. Partial differention, maxima and minima with and without constraints , homogenous functions, difference equations, differential equations of the first order and first degree . Applications to economic theory .

 

ECON 110 Principles of Microeconomics (3cr)

 

Fundamental economic concepts and methods of economic analysis with emphasis on the economic problem: scarcity and choice, demand, supply, and market equilibrium, price elasticity of demand, household behaviour and consumer choice. Production factors, short-run and long-run costs. The investment decision. General equilibrium and the efficiency of perfect competition. Market imperfections and the role of government.

 

ST 110 Statistics for Economists (1) (3cr)

 

Frequency tables and graphs. Measures of  location and dispersion with applications to economics. Probability and probability distributions. Distribution of the sample mean. Point and interval estimation of the mean when the standard deviation is   known or unknown.          

 

ST 211 Statistics for Economists (2) (3cr)

   

Prerequisite ST 110:Testing statistical hypotheses about the mean. Statistical  inference   (estimation and hypotheses testing) about variance and proportions. Contingency tables and goodness of fit. Analysis of variance. Nonparametric tests. Simple and multiple regression and correlation. Time  series analysis. Index  numbers.   

 

ECON 111 Economic History of Egypt (3cr)

 

The methods and objectives of the historical study of economics. The nature of historical knowledge , economic history of Egypt from the French compaign up to the present time. Particular attention will be given to the impact  of the two World Wars on Egypt’s economic policy . Economic changes after the July 1952 Revolution  and  introduction of  economic reform after 1973 War.    

 

ECON 112 Readings in Economics (1) (3cr)

 

Guided readings and discussion of  certain topics selected by the instructor and dealing with the theory and application of economic theory.

 

ECON 121 Principles of Macroeconomics (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 110: Methods of economic research, economic theory, economic system and economic policy, production and income, evaluation of economic activity, elements of national production and total demand, investment, money and monetary institution, impact of international economic relations on economic growth, concept of economic development in different countries.

ECN 123 Economic Resources (3cr)

 

To Provide the basic concepts and theories of economic resources and its relationship to economic problems. Main topics include: methods of managing and classifying economic resources, areas of distribution.

 

ECON 211 Microeconomic Theory (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 110: Introduction to economic analysis, theory of pricing and microeconomic analysis, theory and practice of microeconomics, market equilibrium in cases of complete rivalry, equilibrium stability, elasticity, equilibrium with dynamic analysis, application of supply and demand analysis, consumer - behaviour theory, production theory, production costs, prices and production under different types of markets in different production periods, general equilibrium in complete competition, welfare and economic efficiency.

 

ECON 222 Macroeconomic Theory (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 121: Classical and Keynesian macroeconomics, with special emphasis on the general theory and the resulting literature on the consumption function, the multiplier,  investment, interest, and money, the theory of inflation, economic growth, and economic policy for growth and stability.

 

 

ECON 223 Money and Banking  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 110: Determinants of a nation’s money supply and the role of the central bank, monetary theory, impact of monetary changes on economic activity, international monetary relations, examination of different international monetary systems.

 

ECON 310 Economics of Public Finance (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: Application of efficiency criteria to political decision making: allocation of resources to social goods, tax and subsidy correctives for externalities, minimizing excess burdens of financing government activity. Equity criteria for tax systems and income distribution. Analysis of Egypt’s public finance and evaluation of  Egyptian public policy.

 

ECON 311 Economics of Petroleum and Energy (I) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: Theories of supply and demand on oil world markets, economics of exhaustible resources, theories of oil pricing, modern pricing theory, long–term pricing policy, policy of keeping oil reserves.

 

ECON 312 Economic Development (1) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: Major problems facing developing  countries, alternative interpretation to economic underdevelopment, development theories, aspects of local and international development with special interest in population growth, accumulation of wealth and international economic relations, economic development increasing rates.

     

ECON 313 International Economy (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 121: A study of international trade theories , international policy of monetary mechanism , nature and impact of foreign investment, significance of trade theory and monetary movement to under- developed countries, international economic blocs.

 

ECON 314 Research (1) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: Choice and delimitation of a research topic. Training students on how to write an outline, prepare a bibliography and use a library. Use of original references, periodicals, encyclopaedias. Mechanics  of writing.

 

ECON 320 Economic Development (2) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: An analytical critical study of the main features of capitalist, socialist and communist systems with emphasis on historical development. Modern theories and trends and practical applications to contemporary economic  systems.

 

ECON 321 Comparative Economic Systems (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: Critical analysis the main features of capitalism, socialism, and communism emphasizing historical evolution, current theories and trends, and practical implications.

 

ECON 322 Economics of Petroleum and Energy (2) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 311: Opec’s resolutions on pricing and production, pricing outside Opec, oil and development in the Middle East. Problems of social costs, distribution of oil surplus between producers and consumers before and after the emergency of Opec. Oil markets at present.          

 

ECON 323 Research (2) (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 314: Writing a research on a general or a major field of study under the academic supervision of the instructor to show student’s ability to collect relevant data and to present and discuss research topic.

 

 

ECON 324 Mathematical Economics (3cr)

 

Prerequisite MTH 120: In this course a number of mathematical techniques are reviewed and their implication in economics are utilized

This techniques include matrices, restricted and unrestricted optimization of functions of several variables, difference and differential equations and mathematical programming. Economic implications include consumer behavior, markets, equilibrium, production function and input – output tables. 

 

ECON 410 History of Economic Thought  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 321: Ancient  economic thought, economic thought in the Middle Ages (Western Europe, Islamic thought), development of Mercantilism, Physiocracy, Classical Marxism, neoclassical theory, Keynesian and post – Keynesian economics, modern American school.    

 

ECON 411 Methods of Economic Planning  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222: Discussion of the theoretical framework of economic planning. Techniques of economic planning at both macro and micro levels are investigated. Project evaluation, foreign trade planning, industrial strategy.  

 

ECON 412 National Economic Accounting  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite MTH 221& ECON 222: Basic concepts, development of national accounting, structure of basic national accounting, distribution of income within a national accounting framework, used and value Added Accounting, Accountings of Sectors: Family sector, business sector, government sector and Foreign World sector.

 

 

ECON 421 Economic Policy (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 312: Relationship between economic analysis and economic policy, concepts of economic policy – objectives, aims, tools and procedures. Quantity and quality policy, elements of welfare  economy.

 

 ECON 422 Econometrics (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 222& ST211: Economic structure and model, Deterministic models and probabilistic models, dynamic systems and distributed – lag models, least squares estimation. Errors in variables. Identification problem, indirect least squares, instrumental – variable estimates, two-stage least squares.

LAW 325 International Law (3cr)

 

Prerequisite MNG 161: Growth of the international law of peace and war, contemporary international law and practice, examination of international  disputes from a legal perspective.

 

ECON 414 International Finance (3cr)

 

Prerequisite MNG 222: Internationalization of finance, new theory of financial mediation, exchange rates, international monetary arrangements and trends of international monetary merger, international capital flow, developing international banking system, international debts, role of international financing institutions, money markets, stock exchange and reformation of international financial and monetary systems.

 

ECON 415 Managerial Economics (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 110: An applied branch of economics related to more directly practiced business disciplines including management, accounting, marketing, corporate strategy and concerned with resources allocation decisions in private and public sectors.

 

ECON 416 Labor Economics (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 121: A general treatment of modern theoretical and empirical labor economics. Topics to be covered include: operations of labour markets, wage determination, firm, industry and public sector labour demand, human capital investment, general political effects of employment and the relation between development and stability.   

 

ECON 424 International Financial Institutions (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 121: The politics of international economics, focusing on the role of the IMF, World Bank, GATT, and other multinational institutions. Special attention will be given to the political dimensions of such issues as debt rescheduling, structural adjustment, foreign trade, foreign aid, trade wars and embargoes.

 

ECON 425 Economies of Arab Countries  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 222: A study the driving forces of Arab countries economies, the role of Arab countries whose economic policies may have an influence at both Arab and international levels, oil economic policies in the Arab world and application of economic analysis models to distribution and redistribution of oil surplus in real practice between oil producing countries and oil consumers.  Special attention to be given to the possibility of establishing the Arab Common Market.

 

ECON 427 Economic Integration  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 313: This course deals with theories and controversies driving rapid change in the heart of Europe. The authors combine essential elements of European history, institutions, law, politics and policies with clear and accessible explanations of the economic principles of European integration. The result is an expert analysis of the contemporary status of integration within the European Union.

 

ECON 432  Urban Economics  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 110:Topics to be covered include spatial economics, urban growth, metropolitan business cycles, real estate markets, labor mobility, transportation, taxation, public policy, regional income performance, and additional material as time permits. The objective of the course is to increase student access to the academic literature, prepare students to complete a graduate thesis project, and enable students to successfully compete for corporate, public policy, and academic research center urban and regional economic positions.

 

ECON 428 Strategies and Techniques of Urban Management (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 110: The course initially deals with the definition of urban planning, urban ecosystem and general scope of urban environmental management ; urban management approach including good governance ; gender and health issues and environmental safety issues on a broader sense. Subsequently, the technology oriented and people oriented management system; including ISO standardization; spatial planning, economic instruments; strategic environmental assessment and impact assessment ect. Are introduced as tools and techniques for management decision making.

 

ECON 433  Industrial Economics  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 222: Industrial economics is important for every one being involved in the maritime and port business. It helps for instance to understand why ship owners are merging , or why strategic alliances are becoming so important. It also helps to understand the strategic moves of the different actors in the transport sector. This course deals with : a complete treatment of the basic oligopoly models that are applied in industrial economics, the determinants of market structure and firm structure, the economics of innovation.

 

ECON 434  Environmental Economics  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 222: This course aims to : 1-provide theoretical economic aspects of environmental problems by presenting broad surveys of exist, 2-achieve mastery of a set of new theories and methods in environmental economics developing new tools for dealing with intangibles, contribute to an operation environmental problems by presenting various empirical applications, 3-environmental externalities, costs of environmental damage and management benefit analysis for environmental design.

 

ECON 429 Agricultural Economics  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 110: The objective of this course is to enable students to use microeconomic theory and econometric tools to work on real-world economic problems and issues. Students will work on applied problems and the associated theories of producer or consumer behavior from the perspective of: How do you make the theory work for you? Through extensive homework exercises, students will develop in detail applied problems in producer and consumer behavior.

 

ECON 431 International Economic Relations  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECN 313: This course provides an introduction to economic relations among countries. The course is primarily designed for international studies majors, but is also appropriate for economics, business, history, or political science majors seeking a comprehensive overview of international economics.

Methods of study and nature of political phenomena, terminology and concepts, origins, forms and historical development of political organisation, political institutions and functions, comparison of modern forms of political organization at the national, local and international levels.

 

 

POLS 221 Political Development in the Twentieth Century  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite POLS 210: History of Arabic – speaking Middle East from the pre-Islamic period to the present day, with special emphasis on political, economic, social, religious and cultural development and their relationship to modern Middle East, methods of historical and geographical research, and other interpretive systems. Developing student’s critical ability as regards historical sources and  providing him with adequate training to apply academic knowledge and skill acquired to the main areas of specialisation .

 

POLS 310 Political Systems in the Middle East  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite POLS 210: A study of  the dynamics of international policy in the Middle East with emphasis on regional and big powers interaction. Foreign policies, changing patterns of political alliances, oil policies and their influence on regional and international systems.

 

 

POLS 410 Comparative Politics of the Middle East  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite POLS 310: Comparative study of government ideologies, social stratification, and institutions in the Middle East. Also includes a study of the problems of modernization and political development.

 

POLS 421 Egypt’s Foreign Policy  (3cr)

 

Prerequisite ECON 111& 411: Egyptian foreign policy since 1952, relationship with Big Powers, inter-Arab relations, Arab unity attempts, Arab League, Arab Gulf Cooperation council, Arab- Israeli conflict and its impact on foreign policy, Egypt and Non- Aligned Movement, Islamic conference, Organisation of African Unity (OAU), Egypt’s  (present) foreign policy.

 

ECS 001 Introduction To Computer  (3cr)

 

This courses is a survey of computer terminology and concepts. The history, state of the art and future of data processing are discussed. The course covers basic hardware and software concepts. The computer’s effect on society is also discussed. Operating systems, DOS as an example.

 

ECS 203 Computer Applications for Economics (3cr)

 

The design of accounting system platform. Documentation and data entry in accounting system, files and ledgers of accounting system. Database of accounting system, financial reporting and forms of accounting system.

 

PTR Practical Training Courses: 001,002,201&202

 

Students are required to do four graded training prorammes at various economic and political organisations, government departments, banks and financial institutions. They put to good use the academic knowledge they have acquired in giving advice to or taking part in the activities of these organisations. They can also be trained to evaluate and write reports about their economic performance. They will be asked to make feasibility studies on the economic components of proposed enterprises and projects.
